New technology based acne treatments are offered by Dr. Michalak
With the use of lasers such as “Smoothbeam” and “V-beam” with ‘Photodynamic” (PDT) action, inflammation (pimple, pustule and cyst) causing bacteria and overactive oil glands – sebaceous glands – are targeted resulting in reduction of acne blemishes and decreased risk of scarring.
These treatments can reduce or eliminate the need for oral antibiotics and such powerful and side effect prone drugs such as Accutane. Additionally, areas where acne can be especially resistant to conventional treatments and have increased scarring tendencies such as the back, shoulders and chest can now be effectively treated with these new laser based treatments.
Typically 3 to 6 treatments at 3 week intervals are given before a remission in acne activity occurs. Additional treatments may be required periodically to keep the acne from becoming active again.

Depending on the specific treatment chosen, a light enhancing natural substance, Levulan, may be applied to the skin prior to the laser pulsing. Discomfort is minimal and a cooling spray or topical anesthetic is used to reduce the sensation of the laser light on the skin.
Following treatment there will be a temporary increase in the redness of the skin which will last a few hours or up to a day or two. Slight swelling may also occur occasionally, with the same duration.
There are a number of other new light based acne treatments also available. While also effective, these other procedures tend to require more frequent and lengthy treatment sessions.
For more severe acne especially if scarring has already occurred, treatment with a radio frequency technology device “Thermacool”, may offer a better solution. Dr. Michalak and his staff will be happy to answer your questions regarding these exciting new treatment options.
For individuals with milder acne or who prefer conventional treatment these choices are also available including newer medications. Please contact our office at 425-391-2500 for more information.
